Russian: from the Greek name Dēmētrios, a derivative of the name of the goddess Dēmētēr, which in turn seems to be composed of , a variant of earth + mētēr mother. The most famous St Demetrius was an early 4th-century martyr executed at Sirmium in Dalmatia under the Emperor Diocletian; many legends have grown up around him in the Eastern Church.
