French: from Latin Dio (genitive Diōnis), a short form of the various names of Greek origin containing as their first element the divine name Dio- Zeus, as, for example, Diodoros ‘gift of Zeus’ and Diogenēs ‘born of Zeus’. The name is also used in the English-speaking world, where it is particularly common among Blacks.
