   A group of synthetic textile fibers that, when woven into cloth, provide performance characteristics mostly used by the fashion industry in rainwear. PVC was first created by Eugen Bauman, a German scientist, in 1872. However, it was not patented until 1913, when Frederich Heinrich August Klatte (German) invented the polymerization process of combining vinyl chloride with sunlight. Later, in 1926, Waldo S. Semon plasticized PVC and thus invented vinyl. While both of these textiles are not breathable, they continue to hold a unique place within the fashion industry. From its very early use in raingear and umbrellas, to the trendy mod 1960 fashions created by designers André Courrèges, Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin, and Mary Quant, these fabrics continue their "futuristic" appeal.
