Begun in 1967, this Italian fabric manufacturer was founded by Gimmo Etro. Although a privately owned company, Etro does not operate as many family-owned companies do in Italy. At Etro, each family member has a distinct and separate responsibility, thus creating a balanced business environment. Identified by its signature paisley prints, Etro launched its womenswear collection in 1991. Its clothing is recognizable by the attention to detail and combination of patterns and colors. A significant portion of the line is timeless in its design; an Etro jacket can be worn forever. Etro also has a menswear, fragrance, and footwear line. It opened its New York store in 1996 with rollouts planned in Russia and the Middle East. Additionally, the family is considering Etro-branded resorts and a lifestyle line of products.
