(1796–1857)
An energetic early excavator of Etruscan sites, he is best known as giving his name to one of the most famous Greek black figure kraters found in Etruria, which he discovered in fragments near Chiusi in 1844. He is also renowned for the discovery of the Francois tomb at Vulci, dating to about 350 BC, showing magnificent painted scenes of the political struggles of South Etruria.
