An important upland buffer zone (now famous for its wine vintage) between the major settlements of Arezzo, Fiesole, Volterra, Cortona, and Chiusi that contained a phase of probably independent Orientalizing sites such as Castelnuovo di Berardenga, small rural sites such as Cetamura di Chianti in the Archaic period, and fortifications in the Hellenistic period.
