One of the major collections of Egyptian antiquities located in New York City. The Egyptian galleries were first opened in 1911. The collection was assembled from such purchases as the antiquities of the Earl of Carnarvon; donations from the Egypt Exploration Fund; and most importantly archaeological work in Egypt carried out by director Herbert Winlock, mainly at Deirel-Bahri, Thebes, and Lisht. Major pieces include the statue of Sahure of Dynasty 5, the jewelry of Princess Sithathoriunet, a wooden statue of Senusret I, and the jewelry of the minor wives of Thutmose III. Following the Nubian Rescue Campaign, the museum was presented with the temple of Dandur by the Egyptian government.
