British traveler. He was born in Southampton, Great Britain, in 1704 and educated at Oxford. He visited Egypt from 1737–1738, journeying as far up the Nile as Philae. He visited the Valley of the Kings and left the first map of the area. He then traveled in Palestine and the East before returning to Egypt in late 1738 and 1739 to visit Sinai. Upon his return to Great Britain, he published an account of his travels. He later became bishop of Ossory and then Meath. He died in Charleville, Ireland, on 25 September 1765.
