Funerary chapel
Sometimes known as the 'tomb-chapel', this was the area of the tomb complex where the burial rites and continuing rituals to ensure the survival of the deceased owner were performed. Unlike the burial chamber which was sealed after interment, the chapel remained open to give the family and funerary priest access so that they could continue to carry out the rites. The interior walls were decorated with carved and painted scenes showing everyday activities which the deceased hoped to perpetuate for himself in the afterlife.
