A Persian title for a Viceroy. The *Persian empire was divided into satrapies, each ruled by a satrap. Egypt was placed under a satrap during the period of *Persian domination; also, when *Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, he appointed a Greek viceroy with the title of satrap.

The Persian term for governor of a province. The Persian satraps of Egypt were generally members of the royal family or nobility. The last Persian satrap surrendered toAlexanderthe Great, upon whose death the Macedonian general, Ptolemy, became the last satrap, as he eventually took the title of king.
