The stage and motion picture actor was born in Portland, Oregon, and made his debut at seven. He served in World War I, then joined a stock company in Astoria, Oregon. He made his New York debut in 1925 and enjoyed a solid decade of good roles, mostly in Theatre Guild productions. He is perhaps best known for his roles in two Eugene O'Neill plays, as Sam Evans in Strange Interlude (1928) and as Orin Mannon in Mourning Becomes Electra* (1931).
