(1873-1936)
One of the better-known Broadway theatre critics of the era, Hammond was born in Cadiz, Ohio. He served as drama critic for the Chicago Evening Post (1898-1908), the Chicago Tribune (1908-21), and the New York Herald-Tribune (1921-1936). During his 15 years with the New York "Trib," he earned a reputation as unflinchingly honest, often brutally caustic in his witty salvos, and stylistically scrupulous.
