Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and educated at Rutgers University, he practiced law, then served as a war correspondent. After working with theatre managers, including Augustin Daly, he worked as a drama critic for The Spirit of the Times (1879-1902). He was a founder of the New York Dramatic Mirror and of The Actors' Fund of America (AFA).
