(1849-1924)
The English-born author of plays and children's books came to the United States with her parents in 1865. She remains best known for three of 50 or so books: Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). She attained wealth dramatizing several of her own novels, notably Little Lord Fauntleroy (1888). A lawsuit to prevent unauthorized adaptation of her work in England helped to promote copyright laws to protect authors.
